INFORMATION ABOUT VISA APPLICATION

Japanese nationals are eligible for following three kinds of visa -

  • e-visa

e-Visa is applied / paid / approved online and is sent on the e-mail of the applicant. This service is availed directly from the website https://indianvisaonline.gov.in/evisa/tvoa.html and not processed by this Consulate. All the details related to e-visa are available at the aforesaid link.

2) Visa-on-Arrival

Visa-on-Arrival facility is available to the citizens of Japan at six designated international airports at Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata and Mumbai. Japanese nationals would be required to print and physically fill an application form (Annexure I) (https://indianvisaonline.gov.in/visa/image/VOA_FORM.pdf) and present it to the 'Visa Officer' at visa counter on arrival at the above mentioned international airports in India. You also have the option to fill the form on arrival. The visa fee is required to be paid before grant of the visa. 3) Regular/Paper Visa

  • It is advisable to see the fee details and documents required before filling the application form. Fees once paid will not be refunded. VISA fees are accepted in CASH only. Please see the above fees details and bring the exact required cash.
  • After submitting complete and correct information in the on-line form, take its print out and paste a colour photographs (2 inches x 2 inches) with white background (not older than 3 months) on space provided in the first page of the application.
  • Application form is to be signed at two places; below the photograph and on the last page by the applicant. Please make sure that all the information are correctly filled. Applications with false and incorrect information will be rejected.
  • Address reference in Japan and India needs to be furnished in detail.
  • All visa applications must be supported with original passport, its photocopy and residence card copy for non-Japanese nationals.
  • Original and signed supporting documents like invitation letters, letter of admission, letter of recommendation etc. should be submitted. Only in exceptional cases, scanned copies of such documents may be accepted at the discretion of the Consulate.
  • All required supporting documents must be submitted with the visa application. E-Mail communications are not acceptable as genuine supporting documentsThe onus of establishing the genuineness of a document would lie with the applicant
  • Applicant’s Passport needs to have a validity of minimum 6 months with at least two blank pages.
  • It takes around 5-7 working days to process visa applications in respect of Japanese nationals / passport holders. Visa applications processing time for other nationality / passport holders may vary as it depends upon circumstances or merits of a case.
  • Status of visa processing can be checked online at  https://indianvisaonline.gov.in/visa/StatusEnquiry. The Application ID is the Application No. given at the top left of first page of visa application.

Other important points to Note:

  • From October 01, 2025, all foreign nationals visiting India for tourism, study or business will have the option of submitting a digital arrival card online before their arrival in India. e-Arrival card can be filled up and submitted online through the Bureau of Immigration website https://indianvisaonline.gov.in/earrival/ and the Official Indian Visa Su-Swagatam Mobile app, 72 hours prior to arrival. Though the physical filling of the Disembarkation Card will also continue up to a maximum of 06 months, or till further notice, the visitors are advised to exercise the digital options.
  • Registration is required for certain categories of visa valid beyond 180 days. For detailed information, please check the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India website at https://boi.gov.in/which also provides other useful information regarding Temporary Landing Permits / Visa-On- Arrival / Visa Extension / Registration / Addresses of FRROs (Foreigners Regional Registration Offices) etc.
  • It is advisable that visa be applied well in advance of the intended date of travel to India.
  • Validity of visa starts from the date of its issue and not from the date of entry into India.
  • Applied service is not guaranteed as all applications are subject to checks and procedures. No reason would be provided for refusal of visa.
  • Telephonic queries about the status of the applications before the due date is not entertained.
  • Facilities for taking photographs, copying of documents and exchange of currency are not available inside the Embassy premises.
  • Diplomaticand Officials Passport holders including UN Official/Staff should also apply online as other passport holders and submit the application forms at the Consulate along with note verbale.
  • The visa is granted as per the purpose of the visit declared in the visa application. Involvement in any other activities other than the declared purpose by the applicant during the visit will amount to violation of visa rules.
  • Foreigners having e-Visa travelling to India on a passport different from the passport mentioned on Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) issued to them, must also carry the passport on which ETA was issued to avoid denial of their entry into India
