Visit of Special Secretary, Ministry of Information & Broadcasting to the Republic of Korea from December 16 – 17, 2024

Ms. Neerja Sekhar, Special Secretary, Ministry of Information & Broadcasting [MoIB] visited the Republic of Korea from December 16-17, 2024.

2. The purpose of the visit was to apprise the Korean stakeholders about the upcoming World Audio Visual & Entertainment Summit [WAVES] scheduled to be held in New Delhi from February 5 – 9, 2025.

3. Ambassador Amit Kumar and the Special Secretary Sekhar discussed ideas to tap the growing interest of the Korean industry in this sector as well as connect stakeholders on both sides in the area of Media and Entertainment [M&E].

4. The Embassy facilitated meetings of the delegation with Korean stakeholders including Munhwa Broadcasting Corporation [MBC], Korea Film Council [KOFIC], Busan Cinema Centre [BCC], Busan Film Commission [BFC], Korea Music Copyright Association [KOMCA], and Korean gaming and film production companies, including those involved in co-production projects with India.

5. An animated series, “SnoonZ”, an original IP animated series of Liri Bridge Co., is collaborating with Indian company M/s Artfulness Studios Pvt. Ltd. to produce it as an Indo - Korean co-production. Another proposal is "Astrostation", an animated series to be produced by Alimoli Studio (Korea) and Hornbill Studios (India). An Indian film Drishyam is being remade into Korean as a co-production project between Anthology Studios (Korea) and Paramount Pictures (India).

6. During the visit, Special Secretary also met Indians playing an active role in the M&E sector South Korea. She briefed them and the Korean stakeholders about WAVES 2025, inviting Korean participation at the event.

7. WAVES 2025 is the upcoming global summit being organized by the National Film Development Corporation [NFDC] under the aegis of the MoI&B, supported by the Indian Industry associations in the M&E sector. It aims to serve as a unique hub and spoke platform poised for the convergence of the entire M&E sector.

8. WAVES 2025 will bring together industry leaders, stakeholders and innovators to discuss prospects, challenges, promote global trade and influence the sector’s future. India occupies a dominant position in M&E Sector with talents spread across the country, creating compelling contents through its rich cultural heritage. The summit aims to promote India as one stop destination for content creation, Investment destination and leverage ‘Create in India’ opportunities.
