Celebration of the 11th International Day of Yoga in Seoul

1. The Embassy of India and the Korean Yoga Association (KYA), jointly organised the 11th International Day of Yoga (IDoY) at the iconic Gwanghwamun Square in Seoul on 21 June 2025.
2. With the Gyeongbok Palace providing a magnificent backdrop, the Yogaevent drew in over 700 yoga practitioners, both Korean friends and members of the Indian Several dignitaries and members of the diplomatic corps joined the event.
3. Ambassador Amit Kumar noted the growing popularity of Yoga in ROK, thanked KYA and other local partners for their efforts in promoting Yoga and emphasized the significance of the theme of this year’s IDoY: ‘Yoga for One Earth, One Health’. Quoting PM Modi, he mentioned that Yoga teaches us that we are not isolated individuals but integral parts of nature; the health of every entity on Earth is interconnected and that the practice of yoga transitions individuals from “Me to We”.
4. Yoon Ho-jung, Chairperson of the Korea-India Parliamentary Friendship Group, congratulated the organisers of the 11th IDoY and underlined the importance of a strong Korea–India friendship. Mr. Kang Seung-jin, President of KYA, highlighted IDoY’s symbolism in underscoring the harmony between nature’s vitality and the essence of yoga. Mr. Ryu Seung-min, President of the Korean Sport & Olympic Committee highlighted IDoY’s global significance that unite millions worldwide in the spirit of harmony and peace.
5. The three-hour event featured a series of activities, including the Common Yoga Protocol, Yoga demonstrations, and sound meditation sessions conducted by over a dozen local Yoga groups. Local Yoga organizations set up around 30 booths at the venue. Mr. Park Ji-myung, a KYA member, also presented his Korean translation of Patanjali’s “Yoga Sutras” to Ambassador Kumar.
6. As part of IDoY 2025 celebrations, the Embassy, with the support of local partners like the India Centre at Busan University of Foreign Studies (BUFS)also organised events in Jeju Island (7 June) and Busan (14 June). Another event will be held at Nami Island (28 June) in collaboration with Nami Island Arts and Education Inc. The Seoul Metropolitan Government is organising the ‘Moonlight Yoga’ series,offering a variety of Yoga programs from June to August at Gwanghwamun Square.

7. The Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre (SVCC) of the Embassy conducts regular Yoga classes for Korean friends, members of theIndian diaspora and international residents. It also conducts outreach with Korean Middle and High Schools through open house programmes, which include Yoga workshops.
8. The Embassy also works with Wonkwang Digital University (WDU) and BUFS for Yoga cooperation. WDU offers bachelors, masters and PHD courses while BUFS offers a Masters program in yoga and wellnesswhich includes a comprehensive curriculum, encompassing the history and philosophy of yoga, the science behind it, wellness, marketing, etc.

제 11 회 세계 요가의 날 서울 행사

1. 주한 인도대사관은 대한요가회와 함께 2025 년 6 월 21 일 서울 광화문 광장에서 제 11 회 세계 요가의 날 기념행사를 개최했다.
2. 웅장한 경복궁을 배경으로 열린 요가 행사에는 한국 시민과 인도 교민을 포함하여 700명이 넘는 요가인이 참석하였다. 주요 귀빈과 외교 사절도 자리하였다.
3. 아밋 쿠마르 대사는 연설을 통해 날로 높아지는 한국 내 요가의 인기에주목하였으며 , 요가를 널리 알리는 데 노력을 아끼지 않는 대한요가회와 협력 기관에 감사 인사를 전했다. 또한, 올해 세계 요가의 날 주제인 ‘하나의 지구, 하나의 건강’의 중요성을 강조하였다. 쿠마르 대사는 나렌드라 모디 총리의 발언을 인용하여 ‘우리는 개별적인 요소가 아닌 자연의 일부분’이라는 점을 강조하였으며, 지구에 있는 모든 이들의 건강이 서로 연결되어 있다는 점과 요가 수련을 통해 ‘나’에서 ‘우리’로 나아갈 수 있다는 점을 언급하였다.

4. 윤호중한국-인도 의원친선협회 회장은 제 11 회 세계 요가의 날 행사 주최 측에 축하 인사를 전하고, 탄탄한 한국-인도 우정의 중요성을 강조하였다. 강승진 대한요가회 회장은 자연의 생명력과 요가의 본질 사이의 균형을 추구한다는 세계 요가의 날의 상징성을 강조하였다 . 유승민 대한체육회 회장은 조화와 평화의 정신으로 수백만 명이 하나 되는 세계 요가의 날의 중요성을 강조하였다.
5. 세시간 동안 진행된 행사에서는 여러 요가 기관의 공통 요가 수련 , 요가 시연, 소리 명상을 포함한 다양한 활동이 이어졌다. 행사장에는 각 지역의 요가 단체가 운영하는 30 여 개의 부스가 마련되었다. 대한요가회 회원인 박지명 선생이 그가 작업한 파탄잘리의 ‘요가 수트라’ 번역본을 쿠마르 대사에게 전달하였다.
6. 우리 대사관은 2025년 세계 요가의 날 기념행사의 일환으로 지역 협력 기관인 부산외국어대학교 인디아센터와 협력하여 제주(6 월 7 일)와 부산(6 월 14 일)에서 기념행사를 개최하였다. 남이섬 교육문화그룹과 협력하여 6 월 28 일에도 기념행사를 개최할 예정이다. 서울시 또한 6 월부터 8 월까지 광화문 광장에서 ‘달빛 요가’를 운영한다.
7. 스와미 비베카난다 주한인도문화원(SVCC)은 한국 시민, 인도 교민, 외국인을대상으로 정규 요가 수업을 운영한다 . 한국의 중학교와 고등학교를 대상으로 요가 워크숍 등 다양한 참여 프로그램도 진행하고 있다.
