2025년 부처님 오신 날 연등 점등식

존경하는 동국대학교 이사장 돈관 큰스님,
동국대학교 윤재웅 총장님,
존경하는 스님 여러분,
내외 귀빈 여러분, 교수님과 학생 여러분,
나마스떼, 안녕하십니까
저와 제 배우자는 오늘 이 뜻깊고 아름답게 빛나는 연등식에 여러분과 함께할 수 있어 큰 영광으로 생각합니다. 부처님 탄신일을 진심으로 축하드리며, 따뜻한 인사를 전합니다.
2. 이번 축하 행사는 인도와 한국 양국 모두에게 깊은 의미를 지닙니다. 인도에서는 부처님의 가르침과 철학에 대한 깊은 존경심이 있습니다. 부처님께서 깨달음을 얻으시고 열반에 드신 땅인 인도는 불교의 가장 성스러운 유적지들이 있는 곳으로, 매년 수천 명의 한국 순례자들이 방문하고 있습니다.
3. 불교가 인도에서 중앙아시아, 중국, 극동 지역을 거쳐 한국과 일본에 이르기까지, 해상 경로를 통해 전파된 것은 실로 놀라운 문명적 여정입니다. 이 여정은 정복에 의해서가 아니라, 승려와 학자, 그리고 진리를 추구하는 구도자들에 의해 이루어진 것이었습니다.
4. 부처님의 핵심 가르침인 중도, 사성제, 팔정도는 오늘날의 불안한 세계 속에서도 여전히 중요한 지침을 제공합니다. 이 가르침은 불안 속에서도 내면의 평화, 갈등 속 비폭력, 어지러운 시대 속에서도 마음챙김 있는 삶에 대해 말하고 있습니다.
5. 제가 한국에 머무는 동안 여러 아름다운 사찰들을 방문할 기회가 있었습니다. 한국 불교의 깊이 있는 역사와 전통은 매우 인상적이며, 인도와 한국 간의 오랜 불교 교류 또한 매우 뜻깊고 흥미롭습니다.
6. 인도와 한국의 인연은 신라 초기의 불교 건축물에서도 찾아볼 수 있습니다. 구례에 위치한 화엄사는 그 대표적인 예입니다. 또한, 8세기에 인도를 여행한 한국의 혜초 스님은 인도에 관한 가장 초기의 외국 여행기를 남겼으며, 이는 인도-한국, 두 나라 간의 불교 인연이 얼마나 오래되었는지를 보여주는 귀중한 기록입니다.
7. 인도에서는 주요 불교 성지의 복원 및 개발 프로젝트를 정부 차원에서 우선적으로 추진하고 있습니다. 또한, 한국과 같은 협력국들과 함께 불교 문헌을 보존하고, 학술 연구를 진흥하며, 영적 관광을 강화하는 데에도 힘쓰고 있습니다.
최근 인도 정부는 부처님께서 설법하신 언어인 팔리어에 고전어 지위를 부여하였으며, 이는 불교 연구를 더욱 발전시키는 데 큰 힘이 될 것입니다.
8. 2021년, 인도 정부는 통도사에 부처님 상을 기증하였습니다. 통도사는 서기 646년에 인도를 다녀온 한국의 승려들에 의해 세워졌으며, 부처님께서 제자들에게 법을 설하셨던 인도의 라즈그리하 산맥과 닮은 형상의 영축산 인근에 자리하고 있습니다.
9. 2023년에는 조계종의 고위 승려 100여 명으로 구성된 대규모 인도 방문 대표단을 환영한 바 있습니다. 저도 개인적으로 대표단이 도보 순례를 마친 후, 우타르프라데시 주의 룩나우에서 해당 주 총리께서 주최하신 환영 행사에서 그분들을 직접 만나 뵙는 영광을 가졌습니다.
10. 저는 오늘 이 자리에 밝혀진 16,000개의 연등을 보며 깊은 감동을 받았습니다. 등불 하나하나가 기도, 희망, 그리고 자비를 실천하겠다는 다짐을 상징합니다.
부처님께서는 “하나의 불꽃으로 수천 개의 촛불을 밝힐지라도, 그 불꽃의 생명은 줄어들지 않는다”고 말씀하셨습니다. 이 연등들이 우리에게 알려주길 바랍니다 — 나누어진 자비는 줄어들지 않고, 오히려 더욱 커져 간다는 사실을.
11. 부처님의 지혜의 빛이 우리 모두를 평화와 조화, 그리고 상호 존중의 길로 이끌어주시길 기원합니다.

2025 Buddha’s Birthday Lantern Lighting Ceremony

Distinguished guests, Faculty and students

It is a great honor for me and my spouse to join you all at this auspicious and beautifully illuminated ceremony to celebrate the birth anniversary of Lord Buddha. I extend my warm greetings to you all.
2. This celebration holds profound meaning for both India and Korea. In India, there is deep reverence for the teachings and philosophy of Lord Buddha. As the land of his enlightenment and Mahaparinirvana, India is home to some of the most sacred sites in Buddhism, visited by thousands of Korean pilgrims every year.
3. The spread of Buddhism from India to Central Asia, to China and Far-East all the way to Korea and Japan including through maritime links is a remarkable civilizational journey. It was carried not by conquest but by monks, scholars, and seekers.
4. Lord Buddha’s core teachings - the Middle Path, the Four Noble Truths, and the Eightfold Path - offer timeless guidance in today’s turbulent world. They speak to inner peace amidst anxiety, non-violence in times of conflict, and mindful living in an age of distraction.
5. During my stay in Korea, I have had the opportunity to visit several beautiful Buddhist temples. The Korean Buddhist history is a rich and fascinating subject; so is the long tradition of India-Korea Buddhist exchanges.
6. The Indian connect is seen in Buddhist architecture in Korea, particularly those during early parts of Silla Dynasty. The Hwaeomsa in Gurye is one prominent example. The Korean Buddhist monk Hyecho, who traveled to India in the 8th century, left behind one of the earliest foreign travelogues of India.
7. In India, the Government has prioritized the restoration and development of key Buddhist pilgrimage sites. We are also working with partner countries like Korea to preserve Buddhist manuscripts, promote academic research, and strengthen spiritual tourism. The Government recently accorded the status of Classical Language to Pali language, in which Lord Buddha gave his sermons. This would help further promote Buddhist studies.
8. In 2021, the Government of India provided a statue of Lord Buddha to Tongdo-sa. This temple built in 646 AD was established by monks who had traveled to India. The Temple site was finalized near Mountain Yeongchuksan, which resembles the shape of Rajgriha mountain ranges, where Lord Buddha imparted Dhamma to his disciples.
9. In 2023, we welcomed a high-ranking delegation of more than 100 senior Buddhist monks from Jogye Order in 2023. I was privileged to meet them in14 pt Lucknow, where the Chief Minister of UP had hosted them on conclusion of their walking pilgrimage.
10. I am deeply moved by the 16,000 lanterns lit today — each symbolizing a prayer, a hope, and a commitment to compassion. As Lord Buddha said, “Thousands of candles can be lit from a single flame, and the life of the candle will not be shortened.” Let these lanterns remind us that compassion shared is never diminished — it only grows
11. May the light of Lord Buddha’s wisdom guide us all on the path of peace, harmony, and mutual respect.
