Gift of Lord Buddha Statue to Tongdosa Temple

Embassy of India, Seoul, in collaboration with the Tongdosa authorities, organized a series of events in connection with the gift of a statue of Lord Buddha by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) to the people of the Republic of Korea. This included a handing-over ceremony at the Embassy on April 30, 2021, enshrining ceremony of the statue in Tongdosa on May 16, 2021 and a ceremony to dedicate the statue to the Korean people, coinciding with the Vesak celebrations on May 19, 2021.

The statue was handed over in a ceremony at Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre, Embassy of India, Seoul, by Ambassador of India to ROK H.E. Ms. Sripriya Ranganathan to Head Monk of Tongdosa Ven. Hyeonmun on April 30, 2021. The enshrining ceremony of the Lord Buddha Statue was held at Tongdosa, Yangsan on May 16, 2021. During the ceremony, Ambassador highlighted the central importance of Buddhism in promoting India-Korea cultural relations and people-to-people linkages over the centuries. ICCR Director General H.E. Mr. Dinesh K. Patnaik, in his message, emphasized that temples like Tongdosa bring the teachings of Lord Buddha to the world and celebrate the power and goodness of Buddhism all over the world.

On the occasion of the Korean Vesak celebrations on May 19, Indian Vice Foreign Minister H.E. Ms. Riva Ganguly Das, dedicated the statue to the people of ROK emphasising the abiding relevance of the teachings of the Buddha which provide all mankind the inner strength to cooperate for the common good of all and in overcoming the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. She also announced the launch of a virtual exhibition on "Bodhicitta: Interweaving Buddhist Art Traditions from India across Asia”, curated by National Museum of India and presented in association with SVCC, Embassy of India, Seoul and the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism in ROK.

Tongdosa itself enjoys a special connection with India, having been built by monks who had travelled to India and become part of the Buddha’s close circle of disciples. The ceremonies on this occasion were graced by prominent Korean dignitaries including Ven. Hyeonmun, Head Monk of Tongdosa Temple; Mr. Yeo Han-gu, Secretary to the President for New Southern and Northern Policy; Members of National Assembly of ROK Mr. Park Seong-jun, Mr. Jeong Pil-mo, Mr. Choi Jong-youn, Mr. Choi In-ho, Mr. Yoon Geon-young, Mr. Yoon Young-seok,Mr. Kim Doo-Kwan & Mr. Kim Jeong-ho; Mr Cho Hyun-rae, Deputy Minister of Religious Affairs Office, ROK Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism; Mr. Kim Il Kwon, Mayor of Yangsan; Mr. Park Jong-Won, Vice Governor of Gyeongsangnam Province; and Dr Lee Jae-young, Chairman, Democratic Party of Korea Yangsan District Chapter.

The gift of the statue is testimony to the long-standing friendship and civilizational linkages between the people of India and ROK and the historic ties between Tongdosa and India.

인도 정부, 통도사에 불상 기증

인도문화교류위원회가 한국에 불상을 기증함에 따라 주한인도대사관은 통도사 관계자들과 함께 다양한 행사를 개최하였다. 2021년 4월 30일에 주한인도대사관에서 불상 이운식을 거쳐 5월 16일에는 통도사에서 봉불식이 있었으며, 부처님 오신 날이기도 한 19일에는 우리 국민들에게 불상을 바치는 봉헌식이 진행되었다.

불상은 4월 30일 주한 인도대사관 인도문화원(SVCC)에서 열린 이운식을 거쳐 스리프리야 랑가나탄 주한 인도대사에게서 통도사 현문 주지스님에게로 이운되었다. 5월 16일에는 통도사에서 봉불식이 있었다. 행사에 참석한 랑가나탄 인도 대사는 불교가 수세기동안 한·인도 관계 및 인적 교류 증진에 구심점 역할을 했음을 강조하였다. 디네쉬 파트나크 인도문화교류위원회 국장은 축사를 통해 ‘통도사는 부처님의 가르침 및 불교의 선한 영향력과 힘을 전세계에 전파하고 있다’고 강조했다.

리바 강굴리 다스 인도 외교부 동아시아차관은 19일에 개최된 부처님 오신 날 행사에서 한국 국민들에게 불상을 봉헌하였다. 다스 차관은 ‘부처님의 가르침은 공동선을 추구할 수 있는 내면의 힘을 불어넣어 주며, 코로나19 팬데믹을 극복할 수 있는 힘도 가져다준다’고 강조했다. 또한 인도 국립박물관이 주관하고 주한 인도문화원과 대한불교조계종이 지원하는 가상 디지털 전시회 ‘보리심: 인도 불교 예술 전통과 아시아를 이어주는 마음’ 개최도 알렸다.

인도로 건너간 이후 부처님의 가까운 제자가 된 스님이 창건하였다고 알려진 통도사는 인도와 각별한 인연을 맺고 있다. 행사에는 통도사 현문 주지스님, 여한구 청와대 신남방·신북방비서관, 박성준·정필모·최종윤·최인호·윤건영·윤영석·김두관·김정호 국회의원, 조현래 문체부 종무실장, 김일권 양산시장, 박종원 경상남도 경제부지사, 이재영 더불어민주당 양산갑 지역위원장 등 여러 인사가 참석하여 자리를 빛냈다.

이번 불상 기증은 한·인도 국민 간의 오랜 우정과 문화 연관성을 잘 보여주며, 특히 통도사·인도 간의 역사적 인연을 상징한다.
